I've been a cranky, curmudgeonly bitch, lately, hating people in general and being rather growly.
But sometimes, I look around and people become rather less objectionable, in a stunning fashion.
Never mind Pat Robertson. He's a non-entity, a cranky child saying anything to get attention. On the other hand, you have Médecins Sans Frontières, Doctors Without Borders. They were already in Haiti, and their hospital got damaged, so they're working out of the courtyard. President Obama has already sent help, and is quietly and personally invested in saving lives: he even thought to send a ship with a desalinization plant. People are donating relief and aid in droves and it makes me want to cry. Sometimes I just love people.
For the record, if you want to donate to MSF, for Canada, donate here, for the US, here, for other countries, here. Thanks go out to the Yarn Harlot for offering up the links. If you want to donate to the Red Cross, donate here. Epicurious.com has a page with links to various organizations to help with food. Daily Kos has a page with links to go to to donate, as well.
And if you can afford to help, even five dollars, please do.
Edited to add: I will be editing this post at random, if I find more links to go to for helping.

Their previous focus was on preventing deforestation and working on creating sustainable agriculture and limiting anthropogenic effects on Haiti's fisheries (which is how I learned about them). They are now focused on immediate earthquake relief. They're already in the area and know the people.

From my town Charlottesville, I do work with Building Goodness Foundation and got this email this morning::
Karen, Along with the rest of the world, we are closely watching reports of from Port-au-Prince following the massive 7.0 magnitude earthquake. Currently, there are no BGF volunteers in Haiti. Our many friends and partners are in our thoughts, and we are actively pursuing updates from the CODEP compound in L'Acul and Functional Literacy Ministry in Thomassin. Both locations are within 30 miles of the epicenter.
With phone and electricity lines down, communication is limited. At this time, it is too early to know the extent of damage in either area. We will pass along any updates we receive in the News section of the website--please keep checking back.
An anonymous BGF donor has given a $5,000 challenge grant to support the House of David Community Health Center in Thomassin. BGF volunteers designed and built the medical clinic which was officially dedicated in July 2009. To make a matching gift, click here.

Jean is most famously a member of the now-defunct Fugees (FOO'-jeez). Publicist Leslie Chasky says he arrived Wednesday in Haiti and is focusing on his family, his Haitian charity and responding to the disaster.
Several of the most popular topics on Twitter referred to a tweet from the singer urging people to send a text to the charity, Yele (YAY'-lay), to donate $5 toward relief. The number is 501501.
